Keeping your Mind Active may Help Prevent Memory Loss

Many people fear losing memory as they grow older. Although there is no magic cure, research has begun to suggest some good news: we can take steps to help prevent memory loss.

The Stanford Center on Longevity and the Max Planck Institute for Human Development recently sponsored a summit for brain experts. The experts issued a consensus statement on brain health, which included several important points.

First, it’s important to exercise. Regular aerobic exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which helps keep the brain healthy. It can also help improve attention, reasoning, and memory.

Second, it’s important to keep your mind active. For example, learning something new stimulates the brain. (There is no evidence yet that any specific type of learning is best; watch out for programs that make unrealistic claims.) Social interaction can also keep your mind active.

The following tips from the AARP can help keep your mind active and prevent memory loss:

1. Exercise your body on a regular basis. Participate in activities that get you moving around.
2. Exercise your mind. Keep on learning and trying new things.
3. Make sure you have social interaction. Spend time with friends, family, and/or other community members.
4. Take steps to reduce stress.
5. Eat a balanced diet, including foods that are rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. Consider taking a multivitamin supplement that includes antioxidants and folates.
6. Make sure your weight, cholesterol, blood glucose, and blood pressure are at healthy levels.
7. Get enough sleep.
8. See your doctor if you have any health problems.
9. Don’t think you’re too old to try something new.
