The recent swine flu outbreak in Mexico is a serious problem that can make people very sick or even cause them to die – and it is spreading to the United States. It has already been found in Texas, California, New York and several other states. Now we have to look for ways to slow down its spread

Hand washing is one of the most important ways to prevent spread of this disease. People share phones, keyboards and door knobs, so remembering to wash your hands often is very important. The HealthRock singing cartoon, Wash Your Hands is a very helpful way to help people remember to wash.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Swine flu is a type A influenza virus that causes respiratory disease in pigs. Humans can get the disease by being near pigs, but they don’t get the disease by eating pork. Once a person has the swine flu virus, they can spread it to others by coughing or sneezing, or by touching objects or shaking hands and leaving their germs on other people’s hands who spread it to themselves by touching their own mouth or nose. The symptoms are like pneumonia with fever, headache, coughing and sneezing. Hand washing can prevent the spread of the swine flu.
