The word renal refers to our kidneys. They are 2 bean shaped organs that filter blood and send the toxic waste out in the urine.
When kidneys stop working, that is called end stage renal disease. The toxic material the kidneys normally filter out stays in the blood and makes the person sick. Fortunately, there are machines that can do the kidneys work. It's called renal dialysis.
Doctors use an otoscope to look in ears. It has a handle with a light and a low power magnifying glass at the top. The funnel shape lets the doctor look inside the ear canal and look at the ear drum to see if there is an infection.
Cells need sugar for energy. We get sugar from foods called carbohydrates or "carbs". The body makes insulin (IN-sue-lynn) to get sugar into cells so cells can use it for fuel. Some people get diabetes because their bodies don't make enough insulin. That is called Type 1 or juvenile diabetes. Some people get diabetes because they eat too many carbohydrates or more than their bodies know how to use and they're not burning off enough sugar because they don't exercise enough. That is called adult onset or Type 2 diabetes. You might enjoy the HealthRock song "Diabetes".
People get colds by getting "cold germs" into their bodies from someone who has a cold. Sometimes we breathe them into our bodies and sometimes we get cold germs on our hands and put them in our mouths. A great way to protect against getting a cold is to wash your hands before eating or before putting your hands in your mouth, and by telling friends to cover their mouth and nose when they sneeze. Getting plenty of sleep and eating healthy also helps. Listen to the HealthRock song "I've Got to Sneeze."
